I have been following this discussion for months (a year?), as I had planned on replacing my 9000 with a 9-5 Sportwagon some time in the future when rust takes over.
I agree with Stephen on what occurs with substituting beefier standard springs; my brother had a Dodge "Camper Special" pickup truck designed to carry a full time load, and the unloaded ride was downright awful due to the very high-rate rear springs.
I do not know what is contained with the load-leveling 9-5 suspension, but if it is anything like the one on the 9000 CDE, it contains softer springs and Nivomat self-adjusting shocks. People on the 9000 board hate these shocks when they wear out due to the exorbitant replacement costs.
I'm surprised that no one in the US can obtain progressive springs to fit your car, which sounds like the right approach. Have you tried contacting Genuinesaab, SAS or other major importers of SAAB parts? Does Eibach make something that could fit? Perhaps there is a generic progressive spring out there that needs to be applied to this application?
