if you have a CD that has the Nivomat shocks, which only come on some of the CD models, then you need to do both. If your CD is a turbo 2.3 it has Nivomats. I just recently purchased a 2.0 CD turbo and it does not have Nivomats. I have also seen a 9000CD 2.3 NON turbo and it didn't have Nivomats.
To recap, the Nivomat shocks are self leveling and take more of the load than traditional shocks, they used much softer springs. if you replace the Nivomats with traditional shocks... you need springs to match traditional shocks, i.e. heaver springs. ANY 9000 rear spring other than Nivomat springs will work (there are differences in stiffness but any will do), even Aero springs. Ok, I admit it... I bought an entire 1997 Aero suspension from a guy, struts springs ARB and bushings for the front and springs shocks ARB and bushings for the rear... and put on my 1992 9000CDT auto. very nice!
So, ask the dealer if your car has the self leveling Nivomats and if you have the original window sticker it will note them being there as "Automatic leveling control or suspension".
