I get that - believe me I do - but the issue isn't with built-in nav, it's with the implementation of built-in nav. You may lose the ability to get a new one in a couple years, but you get a bigger screen, a better audio interface, and have one less annoying electronic gizmo that needs to be charged, cabled, and stuck to the windshield where it falls off and/or obstructs your view. Building the device into the car *is* the right approach, it's a failure of car manufacturers to grasp the ongoing attention and maintenance high-tech actually requires. Their perspective - which I understand - is the tech will be appropriate for the next 3-5 years for the first owner, and then it's not their problem anymore anyway. Pretty much the same issue and approach that a great number of industries who find themselves suddenly faced with, like cell phone manufacturers and book stores.
Just like with automatic transmissions, power windows, and tachometers they will eventually get it right. It may not have happened yet, but nobody just wakes up one day and is an expert in something new. There is still some time yet to iterate through this developmental period. Just like we all now enjoy turning our cars on with a key from the comfort of the driver's seat, sometime soon we will all enjoy effortlessly knowing where we are and how to get to the new place.
