That saying was a commentary on ability, not on value. Reality's point was not that he can't get it done more efficiently, but that there is no benefit to him or his client if he does. That's a tough lesson for a lot of hardcore engineers (eg my ex-boss) to learn. Paying a programmer $200 to fix a problem that a $50 faster computer would solve is a waste of $50. Technical merit is one thing, on time and under budget is another matter entirely. When you are spending other people's money, technical merit virtually always must take a back seat. Unless you're working for my ex-boss who had no hangups about spending other peoples' money.
