Agree with you on mfr's planned obsolescence strategy. The Japanese carmakers are especially bad, and even lobbied their domestic governments into banning old cars on dubious environmental/aesthetics grounds.
I bought both my cars (until recently adding a 3rd car, which is used, and only as an experimental convertible as a way of finding out whether a new convertible would be suitable for my local weather, as I noticed I tend to keep new cars for a long time in recent years). I had planned on getting a new car every 3 years when buying them (i.e. keeping each 6yrs, as we are a two-car family), but ended up keeping both much longer as I found much better use for money a little more than half a decade ago, as I noticed the economy was going into bubble mode with inevitable collapse coming. Both cars were purchased brand new with every option available except for GPS, because I was already using more advanced GPS's than those built into the cars even when the cars were brand new.
Another thing I tried to get at the time was audio input jack. I knew CD's were on their way out (like 8-track) even a decade ago. However, insisting on audio input jack would have excluded almost every luxury and semi-luxury car on the market at the time. It is satisfying to notice that almost every car on the market today offers audio input jack and USB port; many even 120V output. Consumer insistence ultimately does work.
I don't like hacking into the dash area, mostly because I don't want to ruin the fit and finish. I can monkey around in the engine bay. The after-market audio head units tend to be garish nightmares catering to teenagers; not to mention the after-market head units would have none of the Harmon-Kardon/Nakamichi/MarkLevinson tuning work tailored for the specific cabin geometry.
