Consider my mind officially blown.
People hanging out on a Saab bulletin board, accusing people who use/need/like GPS of being functionally retarded? Do you not see the irony of telling people, "No, don't use a machine that you can tell you directions, but it's okay to use a machine to tell you how to maintain you car?" Don't you guys have paper factory owner's manuals to tell you how to do that? Don't you have neighbors you can seek out for camaraderie? A local SCCA chapter you can join to talk to people about cars? No, you like this technology because it fulfills a need *you* have, and thus it's okay for everyone. But if you don't need it, nobody should? Sounds like horse puckey.
How many of you people swearing off technology own, drive, or have even sat in a 2-stroke Saab? How many of you drive turbo-charged, fuel injected, power accessory-ed, leather-clad Saabs? What's your excuse for those conveniences? Condemning people who want a bazillion MP3s in their car while you press buttons to make windows go up and down? What is that? More "if I don't need it and you do, you're stupid" logic?
I have systematically ripped the AC out of virtually every car I have ever owned because I don't need the cool breeze and I don't want the extra weight and complexity. Based on that, I think it's safe to say anyone on this board who has functioning AC is weak-bodied tool. I don't need it, you don't need it. Simple as that, right? Am I understanding this logic process correctly?
Last year I flew to Colorado, hopped in a 1967 Fleetwood and drove it back 1400 miles across the Rockies, the Utah desert, and Mojave just for fun. No plan, no reservations, nowhere to be. I used my GPS the entire way, it took the worry out of the drive, and freed my brain to enjoy the scenery, the car, and the uninterrupted time with my lovely girlfriend. GREAT TRIP made possible with a GPS. The year before that, we set out in the CTS-V through Sonoma, Naps, and Paso Robles to enjoy many of California's greatest wineries. No plans, no maps, we just spun the knob on the GPS and it told us where the next nearest winery was. When we got tired or it got dark, we had it point us to the nearest place to sleep. We didn't have to drive around aimlessly hoping to stumble upon a winery or a hotel, we had a machine to worry about that so, again, we could enjoy the wine, scenery, and the company.
THESE ARE GREAT TOOLS. Just like *any* tools they can be abused or misused. You guys may not need them or may not want them, but I'm betting none of you own a CNC machine or a sewing machine or a tire balancer. Are people who have these things stupid, or have they simply selected a machine to aid them in their lives, so they can trivialize things that aren't important to them and focus on things that are?
I hate to break it to you all, but some people don't like sitting in traffic. I positively hate traffic. It's not that I have to be somewhere or have something to do, but sitting in a motor vehicle smelling exhaust fumes and filling up the world with more pollution is, frankly, not my idea of a good time (or socially responsible behavior). If a machine can help me avoid that stuff by God I'm gonna use it. Some people don't like swinging by AAA to pick up 5 maps and a tour guide to help them navigate a cross-country trip. Some people would rather just head out and see what the world has to offer, and not worry if the car will make it to the next town.
You guys sound like my "I'll never own a cell phone!" or "Why do we need a computer in the house!" friends from the '90s. The people at the party who make a point of letting everyone know they don't own a TV. Guess what? Not using technology doesn't make you special, or better, or anything else. It makes you a person who doesn't use technology. That's your choice. But to somehow translate your lack of a need to condemnation of people who choose to use a tool is madness.
