That old saying was in the pre-GUI age for essentially text-based programs. I was dealing with graphics and specific functional requirements. It turned out I was (re-)inventing virtual memory on my own using floppy disks! That was half a decade before I was exposed to the virtual memory concept in college. I probably pushed that 48k (not even 64k) available physical memory to the limit and beyond.
I love new technology and the functionalities that they deliver. What I hate is legacy junk that is foisted upon me when the technology has long moved on. An example is that cellular transceiver embedded in my 01 wagon where the analog signal is not even processed by the cell towers anymore. Cellphone technology in pocket sized devices had been widely available for a long time by then. A USB port connection/cradle that would auto dial the user's own phone in case of a crash would have made so much more sense.
