Just to clarify:
I am not a technophobe. I'm picking on a few specific things that I think are abused, overrated pieces of technology. In my opinion, people who NEED a GPS are indeed functionally retarded. Not everyone who owns one falls into this category, but anyone who has become so dependent on a GPS (or smart phone) that they have a panic attack when it fails or they lose it should be embarrassed, and openly mocked. So should the people who need a calculator to determine 30% of 30, which is unfortunately the vast majority of people in this society. (I actually dealt with a store clerk who took literally ten minutes to figure out 30% of 30 even WITH a calculator, when the "magic box" which usually told her the answer stopped working).
Comparing the Saabnet bulletin board, or a computer to a GPS unit is a false analogy. Saabnet provides something that cannot be obtained anywhere else. To answer your rhetorical questions sincerely, no I don't have factory paper manuals, and even if I did they aren't all-encompassing. No, I don't have any neighbours who know the first thing about any cars, let alone Saabs. In contrast, a GPS does nothing that a map and a half decent memory can do, it just allows you to do it without actually thinking or planning ahead. It teaches you to be lazy. I'm not a fan of the application of technology that makes people think less, because they already do too little of it.
