First of all, GPS is nice. I loved it on a 3-day trip in Wales last year, but on a similar trip in Germany and Switzerland 3 years ago I had to rely on maps and both work just fine. Maps are actually much more useful.

But the thing that bothers me about GPS is peoples' dependence on them. Sure, it's great to know where you are within a few feet, easily find the nearest gas station, ATM or Starbucks. But it's very rarely critical.

Life, amazingly, still goes on without a GPS. My directionally challenged kid just drove across the country, relying mostly on a pre-planned route (including detours to visit friends) and a Rand McNally atlas, supplemented here and there with her Garmin GPS. After using both maps and GPS in the western US for the past year and a half, she has found GPS to be less than reliable and not necessarily accurate. While I sometimes use the one in my phone when in an unfamiliar city on business, it's just convenient, and hardly essential if I have a map.

I've driven in most of the states and several countries without a GPS and ssurvived just fine. I somehow found the gas stations, ATMs, restaurants, hotels, and campgrounds without a nanny telling me which way to turn.
