Bose has been working on automobile audio designs at least since the mid-1980's. Nakamichi built the highly customized original audio for the LS400 in 1989. "High tech" console infotainment has been with us since at least the 8tracks, and that represented a huge step forward. What is "high tech" changes over time. That's why permanently affix a specific implementation to a car and take up a lot of the limited real estate on the dash most prominently visible to the driver is not a particularly smart idea.
Compared to today's avaible devices, the 3yr old Garmin probably does not have:
1. a 7" or 10" display that is common to most tablets today that run GPS at much faster rate than a 3yr old Garmin; or even a 4.3" display with 800+ lines of resolution like most of the iPhones and Androids in the last 12 months.
2. reliable voice recognition.
3. up to date map.
I too have a 3yr old Garmin, and I use it as back up. The Droid2 that I use for first-line service however is not only much faster but also easier to see and have more up to date maps via 3G service; the most useful feature over the Garmin for driving being an actually reliable voice recognition . . . and I'm about to replace the phone in the next few months for a 4G phone with bigger and bright screen.
Incidentally, I don't think the Garmin you have is built-in either; as the Garmins back then were more advanced than typical built-in ones, just like when I was buying new cars in 2001 and 2004.
