10 years ago the concept of high-tech in the cabin of the car was very new. We were just a few years into manufacturers putting credible audio systems into cars back them. That was back when a "Bose audio system" meant a small goofy amp and some separates. Hardly the cabin-modeled Levinson et al systems we have today.
I remember when the Ford Focus was the first car to be able to play MP3s natively. That was in '03 long before most cars/brands had that technology but two years after it was available in the aftermarket. Clearly a lag. But not uncommon.
"Back then" manufacturers didn't have a clue how to design or build these systems, and consumers didn't have a clue what to expect. Lots of stumbling around. Just like column shifted manual transmissions, suicide doors, and rumble seats. Sometimes it takes a while for everyone to agree on what the best approach is.
These days, consumers are more comfortable with the technology and have formed expectations about how it should work and manufacturers are being evaluated and chosen based on how they do work. Magazines are reviewing these features critically and industry associations are appearing to standardize them. Just like every other tech there are a million approaches and a few of them will emerge as "best in class."
The evolution of consumer devices is slowing down - my three year old Garmin still works perfectly and doesn't fail to deliver anything a modern GPS can. That means within a very short period of time - if not already - the gap between built-in and aftermarket will disappear, just like with everything else.
