thanks to my phone and computer. But although I'm on a computer all day long I try not to be too dependent on technology outside of work. I'm yet to buy a smart phone, although the time is approaching due to business needs.
Technology like GPS is great and can be very empowering, but too much dependence on it is not a good thing. GPS should not be used to replace some basic skills. There are lots of people who can't read a road map, so they think GPS is great. But when it doesn't work, like if the connector breaks from it falling off the windshield, or a software issue, they are stuck.
I think of a sailing trip 30 years ago. We were sailing overnight from Marblehead, Mass to Freeport, Maine. There was no GPS back then, but we had Loran C and had waypoints plugged in so we knew our course. We were about 20 or so miles offshore at about 1 AM and the Loran just stops. No signal. Nada. So we do a running fix on the the loom of the lights from three lighthouses (the lighthouses were way below the horizon), dead reckoned from that and at dawn we were right on course as we reached the outer markers to Casco Bay. It was all elementary coastal piloting, but two of the four of us on board had the skills.
The flip side of that is the clown in the 35' motorboat who comes up next to us on another Maine trip, holds up his Rand McNally road atlas, and asks us for the heading to some harbor.
Technology is a tool, and can be very convenient, but it's unwise to depend on it, and doesn't remove the need to think.
