you want the seller to accept a lower offer than they would otherwise accept coming from a buyer who has an agent.
The seller has factored in that they will be paying 2 agents when they set the listing price. The agent is also expecting 2 agents involved. Also note, that the commissions can vary + are not necessarily the same for the buying + selling agent (and iirc, dual representation is not always the sum of the 2)... these are negotiated by the seller.
If you can do up the paperwork + present your (low) offer, why not do it + let the seller + their agent work out the commission? Worst that can happen is they reject your offer (which, being low, doesn't hurt your bargaining position). If you need help to do the paperwork, well, you'll probably need to pay someone + you have less bargaining power on that commission...
but I agree, if you don't have someone showing you a bunch of houses, the buyer's agent is getting a fairly easy commission... why not call a few locally + work out a deal? if nobody takes you up, well, there's your answer... a lot will depend on local market conditions...
If you are in a hot market where time sensitivity is involved (such that a lowball bid loses you a great house), you may be wise to just suck it up + get a buyers' agent...
