Becoming an agent (in MA) requires spending $400, 18 hr in class and a very simple test. Please spare me complaints about having to pay your broker/brokerage - get your own broker license and work independently. It is not all that hard either.
Twice the work???? If you think helping with paperwork on $600,000 house should cost $15,000 you are nuts. And it is actually the lawyer that does most of the work - and he is paid much more reasonable ~$1500 for his effort. The agent should not be involved since he has conflict of interest in the matter.
You can get the full MLS data online, including the the co-broker comission (e.g. redfin.com). No need to ask the seller's agent for that (although I have not seen a seller's agent yet who would refuse the direct answer about a co-broker comission).
BTW, there are some facts in the "Freakonomics" book about how brokers typically sell their own homes for some ~10% more (don't remember the exact number) than the houses of their clients. I highly recommend this book btw.
Your definition of "ethics" is definitely wrong if you consider charging the client less a violation.
