The 18 hour class and hundreds of dollars gets you the title of agent, to which you still have to work under a broker. Different states have difference requirements for how long you must work under a broker. But it involves a certain number of years and transactions, as well as more education and tests.
If you are an agent, you have to hang your license with a broker, and thus pay a portion of your commission to said broker.
