Like any other profession, there are good real estate brokers and their are disreputable one. When I used one about 9 years ago he put together alot of comparable sales info and evaluated my house in an effort to arrive at a price, he guided me as to what repairs were helpful and which ones would be a waste of my money, and he encouraged me to not take the first two offers I had and to wait for a higher offer. He did what he was paid to do, he acted in my best interested.
Sounds like you have had a different experience.
