Consumer buying patterns drive vehicle design and marketing, not the other way around (GM's 1950's boast that "they will buy what[ever] we make make" not withstanding). What do you think the rising Minivan and SUV sales starting in the 1990's and 2000's was about? consumer preference for personal safety!

Incidentally, all the anti-SUV predictions about rising road carnage have also been proven false with the SUV sales overshadowing car sales since the end of the 1990's, while traffic accident fatality rate keep dropping afterward. SUV, GPS and cell phone have all contributed the rising safety. The Luddites are wrong 3 for 3. Ludditism simply doesn't conform to reality. While the Luddites focus on "the seen," they fail to keep track of the much more subtle "unseen": SUV's make people slow down compared to driving sportscars (the sector that really collapsed in sales since the rise of SUV's); the higher view, surity regarding directions and keeping in touch and making appointments all contribute to a calmer and less anxious driver. That's why the fatality rates have been dropping dramatically despite all the Luddite predictions to the contrary.

The usage rate of SUV's, GPS's and cell phones have risen in the past decade by orders of magnitude . . . whereas vehicle crash worthiness have only been improving along their old trajectory since decades ago. Ralph Nader wrote his "Unsafe At Any Speed" in the early 70's, not the 90's or 2000's. There is very little chance you can account for the unprecedented rate of decline in traffic fatality without attributing to the more subtle positive effects of the most rapid changes such as SUV's, GPS's and cell phone use.
