you always have fun spinning this stuff!

safety has resulted from designing better vehicles structurally along with things like airbags and other features active + passive... to some degree things like cell phones + gps may be useful, but to attribute a drop in fatality rate to those things is stretching it big time... if anything it's more likely in spite of them... but as discussed previously, the only scientific/logical statement one can actually make here, is we don't know!

and SUVs and minivans are not popular because they are safer. They are popular because they seat 7 or 8 and can (ideally) haul around 4 hockey bags in addition to the occupants... some people like that they can sit up "and see the road better" and *think* that makes them invincible... in my experience, the sitting up puts one above the (already high) center of mass (unsafe), and the raised windows reduce the visibility around the vehicle making them dangerous in terms of seeing cyclists + pedestrians... but the passive safety is usually pretty good in large part because of the mass... modern ones have improved in many respects... but back in the 90's with SUVs regularly being rolled, tires spontaneously bursting, and the most popular minivan ejecting passengers out the back (due to shoddy seat + tailgate design)... safety was not the reason people bought them... too bad swedemurphy's photo has gone offline...
