Only boosting to 8psi. (A little long). Posted by Rose quartz 87 [Email] (#2119) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rose quartz 87) on Mon, 15 Jun 2020 16:14:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi All,
Apologies in advance, if this is a little convoluted.
Stock 87 16v LH2.2 setup but with a mitsu turbo. (Hose for coolant added). Head has been skimmed, due to some unevenness. (PO said it had over heated). Cars done about 350k.
I'm at a bit of a loss. Base is set to 5psi. With Apc connected I get up to 8psi, but then it knocks it back during which I hear the scary marbles in a can.
Timing is set to 16 degrees. I've tried a little advance, a little retard to no effect.
Checked fuel as per bentley and all tests checked out.
O2 swings from 0.4 to 0.9 at idle.
Dry compression is 170 in all cylinders.
Maf is set to 350 ohms.
When I resealed the engine, (I didn't do the rings or bearings in the block), I noticed that there was quite a bit of rust in the water jackets, it appears that the PO had just run straight tap water. I flushed it, (no chemicals), then new Rad, new hoses, new pump. Temp gauge stays at half way, creeps up to 3/4 on extended idle and fans kick in as they should. After shut down I hear hissing from the overflow cap. I've tested for HG failure and it appears ok.
It runs at 18.5hg when warmed up. The plugs are 7's, gapped to spec. I've tried 6's and get the same result.
New Rotor, Bougicords and cap.
Bench tested the distributor, the vacuum pot seems to be advancing and retarding the hall sensor as it should. Tested on the car, timing retards to (about) 11 degrees with bike pump attached to vacuum hose.
Pedal switches have continuity and vacuum. clutch pedal is a little loose.
I'm a little concerned to disable the knock sensor or pressure transducer for testing since it's knocking at 8psi.
Any ideas what this could be? The classic hose under boost coming off? Rusty water jackets causing too much heat causing knock? Troubled/faulty APC system? Slight leak in coolant hose??!! It's driving me a little nuts!
My plan was to chemically flush the cooling system to try and get the rust out of the block and to check the hoses coming off of the apc solenoid for wear. (Solenoid hoses would be first once the engine cools down, only ones I haven't checked!).
Any thoughts at all would be much appreciated. I would really like to get this back to near stock if possible.
Thanks for reading.
