There is actually a raised timing mark on the aluminum just below the starter motor mounting bolt. Years ago I made an effort to see how accurately the slit in the plastic clutch cover aligned with that timing mark and to my surprise it is very accurate if the plastic shroud is secured regardless of how old and beat it looks. There's supposed to be a 6 mm (10 mm head) bolt to secure the shroud near the top and that probably helps in that regard.
