Hi All,
Following Myles and Stevens advice I decided to split testing into 2 areas, mechanical vs APC.
Making and using a boost tester revealed a fault with the vacuum line popping off of the hooter valve.
Vacuum can be pumped up and it'll hold but it will drop a tiny amount before it holds said vacuum. New hose fitted. Considering buying and fitting a new hooter valve.
The charcoal canister valve also started howling at around 8psi of pressure. No fix so far there apart from testing with its intake connections capped off.
All other hose/intercooler connections held up under 1 bar of pressure. No other apparent leaks.
I moved onto timing and spark plug gap.
I had no idea of the concept of the spark being 'blown out' on forced induction motors if the electrode gap was too wide. After a lot of reading I checked mine and they were set nearer to the limit of 0.7mm. I purchased some new 7's, gapped them to 0.25 (.635mm) and set timing to 15 degrees. Idle is ok, not great when cold, fine when warm.
I then got 10psi on the gauge.
That's as far as the gauge goes but seat of the pants felt like the needle went further.
It holds until 4k rpm then drops down to around 9psi. It didn't last long though. Too much heat build up. It was then regularly boosting to 9 and mostly holding. Even after multiple pulls. It definitely feels more powerful than before.
Set it to 16 degrees and I can hit 10psi on the gauge more consistently. (Still not going to end of yellow on dash gauge, but it's near enough).
The mitsubishi turbo is not happy though. Police siren noise every time it boosts. I'm not sure what to do. Get a new turbo or get the current one balanced...I might take the new/reconditioned CHRA route. Any advice on this would be much appreciated! As always, cost is of course an issue..
I wanted to say a big thank you again to everyone on this thread for their advice and for helping me get along the path to learning more about my particular engine and what it needs. I've learnt a hell of a lot in the last 2 weeks.
It's addictive this boost thing. I want more!!
