Rebuilt the turbo and replaced the compressor wheel. Didn’t get it balanced. Reinstalled it.
Fresh coolant.
Made 300% sure all couplers were sealed. New plastic inlet pipe installed to intake of turbo.
Base boost set to 5.5 psi. Reset MAF to 380 ohms.
And....
No change.
Still knocking at 8 psi. Turbo now makes a very nice, albeit probably unhealthy, whistle sound. A cross between a jet taking off and a police car siren.
Next steps will be a boost leak test. The bolts on the waste gate go into the compressor cover. I can’t believe that they seal like that. If that passes then I’ll swap in another distributor, just in case it’s a timing issue. I’ll also swap in another apc solenoid. Other than that I’m a bit lost. Could be the turbo itself. I know it needs to be balanced. I have the original oil cooled Garrett in storage.
Any one have anything else I can test/try? Feel like I’m loosing the battle a bit here.
