I have driven diesels in Europe for years, and was very excited when I heard BMW was bringing a powerful diesel here to the US. I've driven many a Prius rental over the years, and I enjoy driving too much to sink money into such a dull experience.
The BMW may be one of the best cars I've ever owned (Mine has the sport package, so bigger wheels, tigher suspension and better seats). The 425 lb/ft of torque from the 3 liter 6 cylinder is unbelieveable, giving you insane passing power at any speed. Not quite as fast as its 335i gas cousin, but I get 36-38mpg on the highway, 24mpg around time, and diesel is never more than premium in CA...often it's cheaper than unleaded. I had a 335i convertible which got 12-14 mpg around local LA roads...it was a huge gas guzzler.
I have been debating on whether to consolidate the 335d and my '03 9-5 Aero wagon for a new 2014 328d xDrive wagon (2 liter turbo diesel with 180hp) to reduce the fleet and drive an even more efficient car (45MPG highway), but I had a newer 328i F30 body style loaner, and BMW is removing a lot of sport from their cars, sadly. My 335d was MUCH more connected. And my Saab is bigger and way more fun to drive than the new F30 BMW.
While I love the car, if I had the budget, I'd do a Tesla Model S Performance version in a heartbeat. I adore that car! Also, if I change jobs that require a long freeway commute, I would consider a Ford Fusion Energi or Chevy Volt and get the HOV lane sticker. I also like the idea of driving short distances on just electric power.
Cheers,
Paul H.
