I also used to do that (after burning a valve on a c900 while far from home)... but I gave up on rental cars... I think it is a great premise if the rental car company offers something you want to rent... but they rarely do for me! What I found is it was basically impossible to get what I really wanted (a saab or volvo wagon, or any euro wagon for that matter), like pulling teeth to get anything close to that (Subaru wagon, Forester, any european car, etc), and hard enough to get any vehicle at all with roof rails, usually forcing a large SUV car class choice (which we did not like)... to the rental car company, all models of cars the same size are interchangeable... the whole system is based on the premise that someone will pay more for an Impala than a Cobalt based on size, but it is incomprehensible to them that someone would pay more for an Impreza than an Impala, so if there is an Impreza available, it comes at Cobalt pricing, but there is almost never one available! Or that I'd be willing to pay more to rent a Forester or Outback than a GMC Suburban. Drives me nuts. We live in an age of internet booking. It should not be hard to revamp the system to allow customers to essentially book a specific car (or at least narrow it down more).
If you do rent though, often it is very cheap to add a "grand touring solution" to your own insurance to cover rentals as well and avoid the rental companies exorbitant insurance rates (high in part because they are not connected to your good driving record).
