My neighbor drives a huge Chevy Suburban 4x4 all year, just so he has it available for the one week that he and his wife go camping and pull a small pop-up tent trailer. Overkill.

Why am I telling this story? Your idea that you must have a certain type of car for an occasional trip to NYC and upstate NY shouldn't have to dictate what car you have during the other 97% of the time that you are driving it. There may be some changes brewing on this front too, for example: the Fiat 500e (all-electric version of the Fiat 500, currently sold/leased only in California) comes with 12 free rental days per year from Enterprise. Oh, and the accompanying lease offer is fabulous - if this car meets your needs 97% of the time.

Here in Chicago, there are competing car-sharing programs (i-Go and ZipCar) aimed at urban residents who don't want to have a car full time. There are reserved parking spots in public lots to return the cars to when you are finished with your rental, which can actually be a huge advantage to owning a car in the city - depending on location, parking spot monthly rental can approach the cost of a car payment. Most of the cars seem to consist of highly fuel efficient vehicles, i.e. Honda Fit, Prius, Ford Focus, etc. These are very popular for hourly use and weekend escapes, particularly with younger people who don't aspire to car ownership.
