I completely agree on your assessment on the acceleration and handling of a Prius (yuck!), however I was pleasantly "shocked" when we test drove a Volt. From the linked website:
2011 Chevrolet Volt 0-60 mph 8.9 Quarter Mile 16.7
Not a rocket, but no slouch either. With a low center of gravity (battery pack under the floor), well-distributed weight (battery between the wheels) and a firm spring/shock combo, they handle pretty well too - and they aren't riding on tires that look appropriate for a 1974 Toyota Corolla!
