Even so, 45 mpg is still a lot more than the official numbers of your verano.
Again, your anecdotal average of 40 mpg is frankly just not believable let alone usable as comparison. Your car's official numbers are 20 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. So those are the numbers that we can use. Compare that to 45 mpg and it's just no contest.
As for tuning, it's fairly easy to get even better numbers out of the 335d. A stage 1 ECU will get you ~350 hp and ~500 ft-lbs of torque plus the car has handling and chassis much better suited to that kind of performance.
Now, I'm not going to sell my 9000 anytime soon and I enjoy smoking BMWs (including 330Ds) as much as the next Saaber, but I'm not deluding myself that my car can also compete in fuel economy with the diesels...
PS: Above numbers are from the new model 335d. The older models had considerably poorer fuel economy.
