the B234 was the 9000 engine - totally different than what is in the newest Saabs and the Buicks (other than that it has 4 pistons etc). It is true that the older Saab engines in the c900 and 9000 were pretty much indestructible... but the newer ones in Saab 9-3's seem to hold up well and people do upgrade those cars. All newer engines are tighter tolerances, thinner gaskets etc, and probably the bean counters have their way (although some of that is just for efficiency)... I guess my question would be - how similar is the buick 2.0L to the saab 9-3 2.0L? How much leeway did the bean counters in Detroit have vs how much did the engineers at saab "upgrade" the stock GM engine. iirc, Saab engineering staff were involved in the design of that engine for the global platform. I assume tweaks (for cost or performance) could easily be made by various divisions...
there might not be a whole lot of difference between the engine in a buick and a 9-3? that alone wouldn't sell me on a buick, but it does make those buicks more appealing than other buicks of old (ie the slow land yachts for grandpas)...
