Sadly, it seems that nobody pays attention to physics in high school. Including one former engineering manager of mine.
Torque doesn't mean anything unless it can be produced at some given RPM. Torque x RPM would be a useful number. Oh wait... THAT IS HP.
I can make 750 lbf*ft of torque with my bare hands. All I need is a really long wrench. Most people would agree (common sense) that I can't use that to effectively drive a car around. Got the torque, what's missing is the RPM.
I'm not bad-mouthing diesels. I'm bad-mouthing the mis-interpretation of how force, power, and energy are related to each other.
