I just shopped a VW diesel wagon. Looking at 2009-11 cars, the TDIs were running $21k to $23k. A VW wagon with a 2.5 liter, 5-cylinder came up for sale locally for $14k and we snapped it up. I figured the difference in price would make up for any savings at the pump over seven or even eight years of ownership.
