Peak torque is not so important... if the motor had a huge torque peak at very low rpms that tapered off fast, it wouldn't be as great as if it had a somewhat lower peak over a wider band of higher rpms... diesels often peak early, so that may be the criticism being levied here eg vs a turbo...
if I get a chance, I'll google up some images of various torque curves to explain better... a picture is worth 1000 words!
