OK, we all agree most EVs, hybrids, etc., are not "driver's cars." But then neither are most econoboxes. Does having the EV/hybrid not be driver's car matter if it isn't the only car in one's fleet?
This is what I think of with respect to a Prius V, which could possibly replace my wife's 9-5 wagon. It would actually be fine for how she uses a car. She doesn't care about the turbo, the driving dynamics, etc. She drives to work and on work-related local trips and occasionally does a road trip of 1-2 hours. Having a driver's car just doesn't matter. She doesn't care. Give her a windy back road and she'll maybe go 10 over the posted limit, but slows for the corners.
So I look at it like that and figure a Prius V might actually be OK for her. So might a Volt. A Tesla is above my paygrade, but it also lacks range. I could almost get away with one, except for my periodic trips to NYC and upstate NY. Maybe the next gen of batteries in a less expensive model.
Whatever we get it'd be bought used, some kind of off-lease CPO deal. I don't worry about the batteries. If this was gonna be an issue we'd have seen it by now. Toyota builds boring cars, but they do hold up pretty well.
No rush here. Just my thoughts. (OTOH, there are kits available for the Prius that stiffen the unibody, firm the whole thing up, and improve the handling.)
