Re: Gear Oil and Transmission Failure

It is my opinion that sending out mass warning messages about a product
with no personal experience with it is not a good idea. Please note that I
am not accusing anyone of doing this.

One has to look carefully at all circumstances surrounding the failure, and
also have a sufficiently large sample size to be able to make a valid
conclusion about cause and effect.

My experience with MTL has been good.

Putting it into my old '84 8-valve 900S 5-speed at about 150k miles
improved shifting quality noticeably in all weather/temperature conditions.
I did not experience any new leaks or noises after the change. However,
MTL did not help me avoid the failure of the pinion bearing at 186k miles.

With less information and experience, I could have concluded (wrongly !)
that MTL caused my pinion bearing to die. A little research showed this to
be a common shortcoming with early '80's 900 5-speed boxes, regardless of
the type of oil being used.

In my '86 9000T 5-speed (138k miles), shifting quality improved as well.
The difference was not as large as with the 900, since the 9000
transmission shifts much more easily to start with. By about 150k miles,
the left inner driver seal began to leak a couple of drops per day.

Every automotive list has a great debate about synthetic-vs-dino oil's
effect on seal life. The conclusion I like is that high-mileage partially
worn-out seals living in dino oil will end their life a little quicker if
put into synthetic. Once again, I do not blame MTL for the leakage.

Best regards,
