Rear Shocks Knocking

I have been plagued with a knocking sound coming from the rear in my 1991
900 SPG.

I have had it serviced for this problem many times. The knocking sound
appears to come from the top of the rear shocks. My mechanic has tightened
the top of the rear shocks many times and the knocking goes away - however
before too long the noise returns. He then removed the shocks and drove
the car and the knocking went away. We then replaced the rear shocks. The
knocking went away for a couple of months and it has now returned on the
right side. This side has been tightened again, but the knocking persists.

Has anyone experienced this, or has some insight into what may be
happening? Is it possible that the sound is emanating from the shock itself
and the new shock is faulty?

Any suggestions will be truly appreciated.
