AVS Intermediate Discontinued

If you are a fan of the Yokohama AVS Intermediate tire, you'd better stock
up now, as Yoko has discontinued the entire line.

The 'replacement' is the AVS ES100, which has a modern radical vee tread
design that might actually be useful in the rain. Unfortunately their other
goal was 'comfort' rather than performance. I have nothing against a lower
noise level, but as far as I'm concerned the AVS-I was the perfect 'fun'
street tire for the classic Saab and I'm not anxious to lose that feeling.

The AVS ES100 is only H rated in most of the '60' profiles, which may be
irrelevant but probably suggests comfort over handling. The people I talked
to at the Tire Rack who had driven on them felt they were less of a
performance tire than the old Intermediates. And the tread wear rating is
up to 280 instead of 160 - which would be a nice improvement, but I'm not
convinced that any new rubber compound could make that much improvement
without sacrificing performance.

Has anyone here had a chance to try the ES100? There will be a 30-day trial
offer on them, but if they aren't magic there may not be AVS-Is to replace
them with in 30 days...

Loren
