Broken Timing Chain

I think you are lucky that Saab paid anything for it. When
mine broke, the dealer estimated the reapir at $1800-2000.
When they actually tore it apart, they then changed the
estimate to $2400. They had also told me that they did not
have to pull the engine to do it, which was wrong. I ended
up paying $600 NOT to have it repaired (for teardown and
partial reassembly) and junked it. I wrote to both the
dealer and Saab but got no replies. That is why I am not
buying another Saab (though I still have one left).

That car had other problems that should have been
warrantied, but were only partially covered as was yours
(parts only). The fuel pump became progressively noisy
(indicating impending failure) because of the oxygenated
fuel problem. This was a known manufacturing defect but was
only partly covered, just out of warranty. They also only
partly covered a faulty right front driver that had been
previously misdiagnosed three times while still under
warranty. I really don't need to fight every time there is
a problem, and it would be nicer still if the problems
weren't there to begin with.
