Valve Seals

I hope it's not that serious as I suppose, but I wonder if my '86 900i is
still all right. When I start the engine, everything is fine, it runs
smooth as should be, but after a few seconds some kind of nasty sound
starts: like chkchkchkchk or so, just the speed I suppose the valves are
opened and closed. It gets faster the faster the engine runs, though it's
not getting louder. I think recently some oil is missing, although there's
no leak (just had it checked and the dunno-the-name-seal at the driver's
side of the camshaft replaced). It does not blow out that much oil (smoke),
so I really wonder where the stuff might be going? It's been a little cold
here in Germany, but not so very freezing, but who knows? Maybe the valve
seals are old enough to be replaced (220.000 kms), but not if not
necessary. Someone supposed the automatic transmission, but I simply
haven't got one... Who's got a hint for me?
