Re: Loctite 601 & Alternators

A good substitute for Loctite 601 that I have used on my C900 ignition
rotors is a gel form of cyanoacrylate adhesive-AKA 'Superglue'. My guess
for Saab's recommendation to use this is that there is just enough of a
loose fit between the rotor key and distributor shaft keyway to allow for
slight movement. Over time, this would cause wear (and possible shearing)
of the rotor key.
I recently had to replace the alternator on my '95 900SET with 50K
miles. It worked fine, but whined loudly. A local auto electric shop
replaced both bearings and the brush set for a reasonable fee-but it was a
real bear to get it out of the car. The shop owner said that he has done
quite a few of these alternators on NG900s and attributes their demise to
the extended shaft. This creates greater stress on the bearings and wears
them out prematurely. He said to prepare to do it again in another 50K.
Thinking back to my mechanical engineering days (non-degreed), this is
clearly an 'overhung load' on the bearings and not conducive to long
service life. It seems that Saab had Bosch change the design of the drive
side of the alternator frame to extend the shaft but did not compensate by
installing larger bearings or relocating the drive side bearing closer to
the pulley.
Have others had this experience?
