'I have a hard to track down symptom. I hear a (rather loud)
hum when I am driving down the road....'

When my wheel bearing went out last year (about the same mileage as yours -
I can't be totally sure since my odometer is broken) it made a slight noise
at certain speeds which I could eliminate (or at least vary) by turning the
wheel one way or the other very slightly. That was the tipoff that it was
a wheel bearing. If it is a transmission problem, it should vary with
engine or road speed. You don't mention if it is an automatic or manual.
I suppose you have ruled out tires? Wheel bearings aren't terribly
expensive, and not that difficult to do yourself if you are at all
mechanically inclined. It wouldn't be a bad idea to replace them at any
rate, given the mileage of your car.

The small indentations in the cups will cause problems when they get deep
enough. That problem will be a noticeable vibration on acceleration, or
climbing a hill. The fix for it is to simply swap the cups side for side,
so the drivers are working on smooth metal once again. Again, not a
difficult fix, but be prepared to replace the shaft seals as well, since
they are liable to leak once they've been disturbed. (Ask me how I know
this!)
