I just purchased a new/used 2002 9-3 SE -- my first Saab ever, and sold a
2001 Honda Accord EX-L 5-speed sedan to buy the Saab. A few observations so
far:

LOVE the turbo power, especially on the highways. The engine/auto trans. seem
to be designed as a single unit. Amazing downshifts, and the smoothness of
the drivetrain, combined with it's turbine-like sound and thrust is
absolutely astounding.

I love the hatchback utility. The steeering seemed more precise in the Honda,
and there appears to be a overall slight looseness (by comparison) that I
haven't figured out yet. I love the OE Pirelli P6000's for their grip and
quietness -- is there another tire that is as good on this car? I figure I'll
need new tires in about 8,000 more miles.

And finally -- do your homework -- I was able to buy this 9-3 SE automatic -
all options, clean CarFax - Cosmic Blue - 16,000 miles -- for $18,000 USD --
(AutoWorld in Springfield, MO). A Screaming bargain considering the $31K MSRP
from a year earlier. This is the best 'new' car buy out there, as I still
have 3 years and 34,000 miles left on the factory warranty. People are paying
$18K for a loaded Corolla or Civic . . . reliable but they are 'appliances'
in comparison.

So, although I can not compare various generations of Saabs to one another, I
can say that, after driving a plethora of Japanese iron over the past 20
years, the Saab is a quirky, fun and enjoyable change of pace -- a real
breath of fresh air. I just don't know if I'd buy one brand-spanking-new and
take that depreciation hit -- leave that to someone else!
Best Regards, Bill
