The elegant way is to find the wire to the 'fifth gear sensor' and fix it
so the computer thinks the engine is always in fifth gear. The most
straightforward way is a bit of black tape, although to do the tape thing
correctly you need to pull out the instrument cluster.

It's an EPA thing - the upshift light is not required, but when running the
emissions and fuel economy test, the EPA driver shifts at redline or
something if the 'upshift light' is not there. So long as those great big
economy numbers are on the side of the car, marketing will require such
indignities as upshift lights, first-to-fourth shifing, and
'default-to-economy-mode' A/Ts.
