Manual Gearshift Assembly

The shifting of my '91 900 reached the point that the car is only marginally
driveable (who really needs 3rd gear?). My mechanic says the transmission is
fine but the whole shifter mechanism must be replaced. By 'the whole shifter
mechanism' he means: the gear shift lever; the casement into which the
gearshift lever attaches (with 3 screws); and the rod that connects the ball
at the bottom gear shift lever to the transmission. My mechanic informs me
that the parts MUST be from a '91 (I'm assuming 900, S, or T is OK). He's
called around and hasn't been able to find the parts. Does anyone know where
I might get the parts? I'm located 40 miles south of San Francisco.

A few related questions:
Why just must the parts be from a'91? Not from a '90-'93?
Has anyone had a similar problem?
How much should I expect to pay for the parts?
