Sticky Clutch

I have a 1990 900 that recently has gradually developed the following
problem: About half the time, the clutch pedal acts normally. But
sometimes it sticks and feels real mushy as I let it out; then as it is
about halfway out it unsticks and slams into the bottom of my foot, and the
tires shriek and leave rubber on the road.

It exhibits no other unusual symptoms and has suffered no unusual stresses.
There are no visible leaks of clutch fluid, and the brake/clutch fluid
reservoir stays at its normal level.

Any ideas about what is wrong? And can the problem be fixed by an amatuer
mechanic with no special tools?
