Thermo Switch

81 900T AUTOMATIC

I have a malfunction in the radiator cooling fan circuit that is
controlled by the thermo switch.
The switch checks fine. Shorting the two wires together does not cause
the fan to come on. Fan is OK. The fan relay is OK. Tracing the
wiring diagram from a 1982 saab shop manual indicates that the wiring in
my car is different for the cooling ckt. After looking through ALL the
schematics in the factory shop manuals and Haynes manuals (which copy
the shop diagrams), I can only conclude that my setup is different - I
bought the car new and to my knowledge, this wiring has not been
modified. I also know that even when the system was working OK, shorting
the thermoswitch terminals DID NOT cause the fan to run.

After paging through each volume of the 1981 shop manuals, I find a
cooling fan circuit with the caption ' Cooling fan circuit for 1980 with
Automatic' Thats nice, but mine is an 81. After studying this circuit
I also concluded that mine is different. I also noted that doing the
'standard' check of shorting the thermoswitch terminals in the diagram
in the book will NOT cause the fan to automatically run.

So, ultimately I am trying to find out and fix the cooling fan problem,
but I'd also like to get a copy of the correct schematic for my car. It
appears that Automatic Turbos 'are different' but I don't know how. So,
some questions:

- Can anyone offer some insight into this puzzle? send me the correct
schematic? Tell me where to look? Describe what is suppose to happen?
- I can't remember for the life of me, IF, the a/c is off, and the
thermoswitch closes to ultimately run the fan, will BOTH fans run or
just the primary one? The a/c fan works fine-it runs when I run the
a/c.

Thanks for your help
John
