The crank pulley is also called the 'harmonic balancer'. It is made it two
pieces, with rubber between, to absorb certain drive-train
vibrations. Approaching 100 K miles, this part becomes suspect, and should
be routinely inspected. On C900's, the pulley when it comes apart can eat
into the oil pump cover, ultimately making a hole so all the oil comes out
and the engine self-desructs.
