The opening is an industry standard 'Double DIN'.  There are several
available at crutchfield, if you can get past the 'Tokyo at Night' styling.
 Of course, the aftermarket radio will not interface with the SID.
PS: you will also need to perform a wiring adjustment to either use the
aftermarket radio's power amp or to integrate the radio's line-level output
with the existing power amplifier.

I just put in an MP3 in dash CD player. There is a kit that hold the player
and adds a cubby hole available from Europe. I was going to get a peice of
dash to match mine, but I ordered one of these kits through a friend in
Germany. You can see photos here:

I replaced all the speakers too. As I suspected, the speakers in my 9-3 were
all using cheap paper cones.
