Hydrolock

Last summer I was coldrunning a Porsche Club TSD rally, and went through
about 5 inches of water crossing the road. I stopped, and crept through at
a very slow speed, but the car ('99 9-3 5-dr) went into hydrolock. The
dealer's initial assessment was that I blew a head gasket (they saw only
clean coolant in the cylinders) which would be covered by warranty. SAAB's
regional tech said, no, it had injested water, and that was an 'accident',
so my insurance company paid.

But $$ is not the question; how did a SAAB go into hydrolock from so little
water on the road? I have absolutely ignored standing water in all my
previous SAABs (99, 900, 9000, new 900) and never had so much as a miss.
Either this car has a defect in the air intake system (which the dealer
denies, although they admit they did not dismantle the system to prove it),
or SAAB has a design flaw, and lots of other owners should be screaming. As
a matter of fact, my salesman told me that two 9-3s had new engines
courtesy of SAAB from his dealership already.

What about it? Anyone on the list have experience with this? This is my
first day on the list...beg pardon if this is an old subject.
