Re: B2581 Engine Timing Belt Change

This is a fairly difficult and big job. Relatively few do it at home, but
you'll find some company and tips on the NG900 bulletin borad on TSN. I
have changed the head gasket and timing belt on my 1994 900 S V6 B258. It
*is* doable but it takes many hours and will require some investment in
tools and manuals.

First, get a copy of the official 'basic engine manual' for the V6 B258,
part number 0357491. The paper copies are getting scarce since they are
out of print, but eeuroparts.com has them and some dealers may still be
able to order one for you. This was the only guide I used. The Haynes
does not cover the V6. This manual covers all the main engine work,
installation and removal of timing belt, heads, etc.

Most of the mechanical work is straightforward. After you put the heads
back together, installing the new timing belt is VERY tricky. The manual
says you should use an official Saab (Kent-Moore) tool set to do it. I
bought the set for about $300 from a dealer who sold it to me at cost.
There are a couple cheaper aftermarket versions out there since the same
tool fits the Saab 9000 2.5L V6, the 3.0L V6 in the 9-5, the Cadillac
Catera V6, and the Opel Vectra V6. (Do a search for more on this stuff
on the NG900 bulletin board.) I had some difficulty even with the tool but
succeeded in the end. One person on the NG900 board claims to have done it
without the tool, but given the catastrophic consequences (valve damage) if
you screw it up even slightly, I would not chance it.

That gives you an overview. You will also need a buddy for a few steps,
a torque wrench, a full set of Torx bits through T55 or T60 (can't
remember) and Torx sockets up to E14 or so, many new parts (e.g., timing
belt kit $400, new head gaskets, new head bolts since they are 'stretch
bolts' etc.). The manual is quite good about telling you when to use new
parts.

Good luck!
