Engine Idle Rattle

For a while now my '96 900 SET has had a rattly noise, that can be heard
while idling. It seems worse when the engine is cold, but it does not go
away when the engine is warm either. I had a mechanic from the dealer
look at it (or better: listen to it), but he could not figure out what
the problem was. At some point, when he was shifting the automatic from
Neutral to Drive it would go away, somewhere between the two settings.
He looked underneath the car, but could not see any problems/causes.

The preliminary conclusion is that there is something loose in the
(automatic) transmission. If I want them to look into it, it is going to
cost a lot, because they do not do transmission work themselves (and
that would only be to diagnose the problem...)

Anyone have any similar experiences? Any idea what the problem could be?
The noise is a sort of rattling, which can be heard inside the car as
well (when idling).
