My local dealer checked over my '97 900S for it's intermittent stalling
problem.  Naturally they did not find anything.  However, they mentioned that
there have been rare instances where defective exhaust lifters in the engine
have caused a stalling problem.  Apparently they fail to open and close properly
and this leads to starving the engine of oxygen and causing an accumulation of
exhaust gases.  This stalls the engine.  I have also  had instances where the
engine stumbles but then continues (although the transmission sticks in the limp
home mode until the engine is turned off and restarted) and presumably these
could be situations where the lifters briefly stick or fail and then suddenly
clear themselves.

This seems to be the only lead at this point but of course the repair is
expensive - $600 plus - and it may not solve the problem.  Has anyone else heard
of this problem and does it sound like a reasonable explanation for intermittent
stalling?  Thanks.
